We are delighted to initiate our blog with this introduction.
BrainwavesAI is a technology company specializing in the predictive monitoring of electrical brain signals. There is a tremendous amount of information that is contained in such signals but there is also an awful lot of noise. The principal tool for measuring electrical brain signals is EEG (electroencephalogram), which was invented a hundred years ago. During the past 100 years, scientists have been using EEG signals to extract meaningful information regarding various brain processes, mechanisms, and conditions. For example, some of the main fields that use EEG brain signals are:
EEG is the principal method for diagnosing epilepsy, for identifying the type of epilepsy, and the brain location of the origin of the epileptic seizures and how they propagate.
EEG is the principal method for identifying the classic sleep stages (such as REM sleep, slow-wave sleep, etc.), and various anomalies that might occur during sleep. And more recently understanding the connections between epilepsy and sleep.
EEG can also be used as a therapeutic tool for anxiety or hyperactivity or as a training tool for maximising performance using neurofeedback methods.
EEG can be used to better understand decision making processes and what influences our choices.
BrainwavesAI has developed artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies that monitor, discern, and even predict all of the above.
We are currently in the process of commercializing our technology and are focused on the very compelling needs of people living with epilepsy.
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, 1 in 10 people suffer from brain seizures and 10% of those are ultimately diagnosed with epilepsy. Approximately 1% of the population has epilepsy – 3.4 million people in the US and approximately 2 million in western Europe. Epilepsy can be devastating for patients and their families: seizures can be debilitating and prevent people from many daily activities such as driving, swimming, climbing a ladder, and can even interfere with a person’s ability to work and earn a living. For many parents of children with epilepsy and carers, there is the exhausting need for constant vigilance, sleep loss and the gnawing anxiety of potential SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy).
But there is also good news. There are treatments that can help many people who have epilepsy. Diagnosis, treatment, and maintenance of epilepsy requires close and continuous monitoring of patients’ brain activity and the value of predicting the onset of a seizure ahead of time is very compelling. A seizure that is anticipated ahead of time, allows mitigating actions to be taken. It may even be possible to prevent the seizure from taking place or at least to eliminate the potential damage and disruption as well as the emotional turmoil attendant upon a sudden seizure. Furthermore, according to the Epilepsy Foundation, there is a direct relationship between reducing the number of seizures and lowering the risk of SUDEP.
We established BrainwavesAI to supply this unmet crucial need. BrainwavesAI has developed technology for continuous monitoring and prediction of epileptic seizures for people in their homes. We are delighted to be working to bring this important technology to market and we are looking forward to helping people who are living with epilepsy, as well as their carers, and their families take back control of their lives.
